Elgin tops a list for the best mid-sized city in the Midwest for holding business meetings, besting Naperville, Aurora and a host of other towns.

“We are honored that Elgin is recognized as one of 2018’s best mid-sized cities for business meetings as we have always been proud that Elgin is an attractive and budget-friendly destination,” said Kimberly Bless, President and CEO for the Elgin Area Tourism Bureau.

The list was put together for RewardExpert, an online service that helps consumers evaluate credit card and travel awards programs.

Naperville came in second in the Midwest rankings, while Aurora is listed at 14. There are rankings for six regions of the country.

“We analyzed cities with populations between 100,000 and 300,000 residents across seven broad categories,” RewardExpert Communications Director Kaja Olcott said.

Those categories included affordability, climate, commute, business atmosphere, events, accommodation and dining and safety.

“As a small business owner, I know how challenging it can be to choose a location in which to host a business meeting that will be both pleasant for my clients and team members, and work within our budget,” RewardExpert CEO Roman Shteyn said in a prepared statement. “There are many locations across the country outside of New York, L.A. or Chicago that strike a balance between fun and affordability.”

The findings claim Elgin is the Midwest’s most cost-efficient business meeting destination because of its proximity to Chicago and accessibility to people visiting from all parts of the country.

Elgin City Council member Terry Gavin agreed that it is easy to get to Elgin, given recent improvements and the expansion of Interstate 90, the Randall Road corridor and the city being relatively close to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport as well as the rest of the big city.

Gavin said Elgin has a number of quality places to hold a meeting, including the Business Conference Center at Elgin Community College not far from Randall Road, rooms at the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce downtown and the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Chicago Northwest along Route 31 and not far from I-90.

Bless noted the ballroom overlooking the Fox River at the Grand Victoria Casino “offering spectacular views” and the Heritage Ballroom offering scenic views and adjacent to Walton Island in downtown Elgin as other options offering meeting spots.

“If someone is looking for smaller venues for under 200 guests we have an eclectic mix of spaces that are hidden gems that most people are unaware of until they contact our tourism office – Imago, The Haight, Elgin Public House, Elgin Art Space Lofts to name a few,” Bless said.

“Elgin has a wonderful atmosphere for the arts and cultural activities, with a strong base of organizations and individual artists,” the findings state.

The findings also note an array of activities including the area’s golf courses and “wintertime skiing and ice skating, available at locations within a one-hour drive from the city, making it a breeze to arrange after-meeting activities.”

Bless also highlighted the casino and the variety of dining options in Elgin. Plus, parking in and around Elgin remains free, Bless said.

Wendi Howard, the bureau’s sales manager, said the organization’s top priority is driving people to Elgin for overnight travel including meetings and events, and it works with local hotels and venues to do so.

“Most people do not realize our services are free and that the tourism office should be the first call you make when planning a social or corporate event,” Howard said.
